Help the Noobs, Challenge the Pros

We're aiming to make our game challenging, but accessible.  So players who are inexperienced with first-person or PC games may struggle a little, but we still want you to have fun!

If you're struggling particularly hard, let us know.  Especially if there's some area or mechanic in particular that kills the fun.  In fact, if you ever stop playing our game for any reason other than "Holy crap it's been 3 hours, I need to get some sleep!"... we want to know.

For anyone who's gotten used to the game play, and is seeing how high they can get, let it be known that both the programmers on our project (Zeb and Thomas) have reached the top of the version 0.0.2 level, from the bottom, without cheating.
It's possible! And we have proof!
(HINT: Pressing "C" in-game creates a new respawn checkpoint, do this often!)

In lieu of this achievement, we're uploading a taller version of the current level...
twice as tall, to be exact.  With obstacles.  And death-causing boxes.
If this makes you sad, have no fear... the older version is still available!
If this excites you, then you're in luck!  We'll be making our game bigger, better, and more fun every week for a long time.

  1. First off, your game is awesome. Like, the greatest unfinished free game on the internet since minecraft (which no longer can win the award due to being out of beta). That awesome. Now that the completely warranted praise is out of the way, onto more praise. I got to the top last Tuesday, and I was going to point this out to you in bugs, but today I decided to go from the bottom up again mainly because I noticed that all the top blocks have become orange, and that the world is different than it was, so more challenge! Also, in an attempt to convey how good this is already, read this: I showed your game to my friends at school, and it has become what we now do when we have free time in the computer lab. Basically, keep up the good work! It's great right now, and I can't wait to see where it goes!

    1. Thanks for the kind words!
How many people is "me and my friends"? Are you guys avid gamers? FPS/shooter fans? What kind of computers are you running it on, and how is it running? Anything you'd change if you could?

We'd love to hear more from you, and please, keep spreading the game as long as you enjoy it! Also, how did you guys find out about it?

    2. When I say "me and my friends", there are about 7 or 8 of us. Most of us game regularly, but one or two don't game often and still find your game enjoyable. As to the computers... most of them aren't very good- they run Windows XP with at most 1 gig of ram, sometimes less- but they run your game fairly solidly. The thing that limits us the most is our terrible internet connection.
As to where I found out about it, I follow Leelee on tumblr (due to her work on Name Game at The Escapist) and when she linked it on tumblr, I decided to check it out. After messing around for an hour or so, I decided to show it to my friends the next day.
Now, if I could change anything, I think I'd probably expand the level more, maybe add more elements to make it challenging. I remember one time that to get to the next set of blocks, I had to wait for a rotating orange block to get level in order to bounce me high enough up. If there were more stuff like that, elements of timing and logic, it would get even better.
Finally, I've noticed that some of the purple spheres (my friends and I call them gravity wells) up at the top seem to fall off of the orange blocks and plummet to their doom. You may want to take a look at that.
I hope the game just keeps getting better!

    3. 1. Your computers: Glad to hear it's working on lower-end PCs. Do you think it would be worthwhile for us to include a downloadable version of each build?

      2. Leelee's Blog: Leelee will get a huge team hug tomorrow... She's been getting us lots of publicity, cuz she's awesome like that :D

      3. Gameplay: The current prototype hardly resembles what we're imagining for actual gameplay. We definitely plan on having more explicit challenges/puzzle-like scenarios to overcome, and I agree about the rotating blocks! We're considering adding difficulty levels.
      More on all that later.
Also, the purple spheres are Skuttles -- they'll eventually be levitating, robotic, crab-like creatures, if the current concept art sticks. And Thomas loved the idea of having them rain from the sky :)

We'll be starting production (a.k.a. working on the game 24/7) shortly, and will have weekly -- if not daily -- updates and game builds posted to the blog. So check back in soon, and keep the awesome feedback coming!

    4. 1. For downloadable versions of the builds, while it would be nice to play without having to go on the internet, I doubt that my school would be happy with us downloading random programs on their machines. And I'm actually rather impressed that one time we managed to have like six of us playing at one time, all drawing from our at most 1 Mbps internet speed.

      2. Leelee totally deserves that hug.

      3. The different difficulties will be good, so those starting out won't be introduced to spirit-crushing difficulty immediately. Also, here's an idea- I don't know if you actually choose the placement of blocks in the level, or if it is randomly generated, or something, but if it is randomly generated, you could have a mode kind of like the "zen" modes in puzzle games, where it is neverending, but instead of swapping jewels or sliding rows of fuzzballs (bejeweled and chuzzle, respectively), you would just keep climbing, not for the goal of reaching the top but for the simple joy of moving upwards.
And I incorrectly remembered the color of the Skuttles as purple when they're actually more of an orange-reddish color. But whatever. Also, I agree with Thomas- they should rain from the sky.

Anyway, I've probably posted too much in the comments section for this post, so if I have any more feedback, I'll just e-mail you at the address given in the first post in this blog (creativecrates@gmail.com, if I remember correctly). I'll preface my first message with something like "Hey, I was that guy who said those things on your place at the interwebnets" so you can know that it's that one guy.

I wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors!
